Bonnie’s 21km Swim Raising $10,000 for Men’s Mental Health

On the 29th of May, Bonnie Hancock dived into the water on a chilly Gold Coast morning to commence a 21klm swim for charity. The talented Surf Lifesaver and Accredited Dietitian completed an incredible 430 laps of the Miami aquatic center pool, the goal to raise $10,000 for Mindpak, a men’s mental health organisation which focuses on building a “6-pack mind” and not just Abs.

 

 

“I’ve been inspired by the work that Mindpak do, I think that men’s mental health, and mental health in general is a really important topic to discuss and raise awareness for.” Bonnie said.

Mindpak is a local group men’s group located in Southport, which provides a comfortable environment for men to meet and discuss, and gain support for their mental, physical, social and emotional wellbeing. Bonnie saying the Mindpak is open to men of all ages who may be struggling with their mental health and well-being.

“They meet monthly, and they have guest speakers and it’s a night where men can feel comfortable and in a safe environment to chat about how they might be feeling and walk away from there with their head held high.”

The Ten thousand dollars raised by Bonnie will be used to assist Mindpak expand their national footprint and open centers in other cities around the country.

“Society is slowly changing and encourage men to open up and speak more freely about how they are feeling, be it with their mates, their partner or through the support systems they have in place.” Bonnie said.

Bonnie trained three times a week and swam 10klms each weekend in the lead up to the marathon journey, however it was the end goal which kept her going as she completed the longest swim of her career. She’s now calling on the community to help her reach the 10k finish line. With over $6,500 already raised, Bonnie now needs your help to help.
